Semi-learned borrowing from Sanskrit स्फूर्ति (sphūrti, quick, strong or rash movement), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *spʰr̥Htiṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sp⁽ʰ⁾r̥Htiš, from Proto-Indo-European *spr̥Htis, from *sperH- (to kick, move quickly or rashly). Cognate with Punjabi ਫੁਰਤੀ (phurtī), Nepali फुर्ति (phurti), Bengali ফুর্তি (phurti).
