[edit]Alteration of Prakrit 𑀨𑁂𑀧𑁆𑀨𑀲 n (phĕpphasa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟- (-ḍa-) + -𑀓- (-ka-), from a variety of onomatopoeic words for "lung" from the sound of blowing or puffing, ultimately related to Sanskrit फुप्फुस m (phupphusa, “lung”), फुफुस n (phuphusa, “lung”), फुत्कार (phutkāra, “huffing, hissing”), पुप्फुल (pupphula, “flatulency”), and फुप्फुकारक (phupphukāraka, “panting, gasping”). Cognate to Gujarati ફેફસું (phephsũ) and Sindhi फिफड़. Related to फप्फस (phapphas), फफसा (phaphsā, “swollen”). Doublet of फुप्फुस (phupphus), a tatsama.
