[edit]Inherited from Prakrit 𑀯𑀸𑀭𑀸𑀡𑀲𑀻 (vārāṇasī), from Sanskrit वाराणसी (vārāṇasī) (which is a metathesized form).[1] Alternatively, named after the Rājā Bānār, who had rebuilt the city.
