Inherited from Prakrit *बुहुक्खअ (buhukkhaa), from Sanskrit *बुभुक्षक (bubhukṣaka, desiring to eat), a back-formation from बुभुक्षति (bubhukṣati, to desire to eat) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-). By surface analysis, भूख (bhūkh) +‎ -आ ().

Cognate with Braj भूखौ (bhūkhau).
