[edit]Inherited from Prakrit *बुहुक्खव ~ *बुहुक्खअ (buhukkhava ~ buhukkhaa), from Sanskrit *बुभुक्षक (bubhukṣaka, “desiring to eat”), a back-formation from बुभुक्षति (bubhukṣati, “to desire to eat”) + -अक (-aka, “doer”). Cognate with Hindi भूखा (bhūkhā).
