From Proto-Indo-Iranian *máyHas (“pleasure, enjoyment”), from Proto-Indo-European *meyh₁-es-, from Proto-Indo-European *meyh₁- (“pleasure, pleasant”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬌𐬌𐬀𐬵 (maiiah, “pleasure”), Proto-Slavic *mìlъ (“sweet”), Lithuanian mielas (“nice, sweet, cute”), Latin mītis (“mild, calm, pleasant”), English mitigate.
