Etymology

Borrowed from Classical Persian مسجد (masjid), from Arabic مَسْجِد (masjid). Replaced Old Hindi मसीति (masīti). Compare Bengali মসজিদ (mosjid), Gujarati મસ્જિદ (masjid), Marathi मशीद (maśīd), Odia ମସଜିଦ୍ (masajid), Punjabi ਮਸੀਤ (masīt).
