Etymology

[edit]

Along with मस्तक (mástaka, head, skull), belongs to a complex of words represented by the marginally-attested मस्तृहन् (mastṛhan, brain), itself from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mastr̥gʰā́n (brain), whence also Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬯𐬙𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬖𐬀𐬥 (mastərəγan, brain). The Indo-Iranian term appears to be related to Proto-Indo-European *mosgʰós (marrow; brain),[1] perhaps compounded with *mregʰ- (brain);[2] see those entries for more.
