Etymology
[edit]Along with मस्तक (mástaka, “head, skull”), belongs to a complex of words represented by the marginally-attested मस्तृहन् (mastṛhan, “brain”), itself from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mastr̥gʰā́n (“brain”), whence also Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬯𐬙𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬖𐬀𐬥 (mastərəγan, “brain”). The Indo-Iranian term appears to be related to Proto-Indo-European *mosgʰós (“marrow; brain”),[1] perhaps compounded with *mregʰ- (“brain”);[2] see those entries for more.
