Borrowed from Classical Persian ماضی (māzī), from Arabic مَاضِي (māḍī).
Cognate with Gujarati માજી (mājī), Kannada ಮಾಜಿ (māji), Tamil மாஜி (māji), Marathi माजी (mājī), Telugu మాజీ- (mājī-).
