[edit]Possibly from Proto-Indo-Aryan *mlaHtás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mlaHtás (whence Avestan 𐬨𐬭𐬁𐬙𐬀 (mrāta)), passive past participle of *mláHti (whence Ossetian фӕллад (fællad, “to get tired, weary”)), from Proto-Indo-European *mléh₂-ti, from *mleh₂- (“to make weak, soft, tender”) + *-ti.[1] Cognate with Old Irish mláith, Ancient Greek μαλακός (malakós).
