Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀭𑀸𑀬𑀉𑀢𑁆𑀢 (rāyaütta), from Sanskrit राजपुत्र (rājaputra, prince). Doublet of राजपूत (rājpūt) and राऊत (rāūt).
