From Proto-Indo-European *weyḱpotis. Cognate formation to Lithuanian viẽšpats (lord), Avestan 𐬬𐬍𐬯𐬞𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌 (vīspaiti, chief of a tribe), Old Prussian waispattin (mistress of a house) and probably Albanian zot (lord, master).


विश्पति (víś-pátim

  1. the chief of a settlement or tribe, lord of the house or of the people (also applied to Agni and Indra) (RV., AV., TS.)

      सद्यो अध्वरे रथिरं जनन्त मानुषासो विचेतसो य एषाम |
      विशामधायि विश्पतिर्दुरोणे.अग्निर्मन्द्रो मधुवचा रतावा ||
      sadyo adhvare rathiraṃ jananta mānuṣāso vicetaso ya eṣām |
      viśāmadhāyi viśpatirduroṇe.aghnirmandro madhuvacā ṛtāvā ||
      Forthwith the men, the best of these for wisdom, have made him leader in the solemn worship.
      As Lord in homes of men is Agni stablished, the Holy One, the joyous, sweetly speaking.
