Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Prakrit 𑀲𑀺𑀁𑀖𑀸𑀟𑀕 (siṃghāḍaga), from Sanskrit शृङ्गाटक (śṛṅgāṭaka, water caltrop). The Sanskrit term seems to be from शृङ्ग (śṛṅga, horn), but it is likely to be a back-formation from the Prakrit term rather than a genuine derivation. Note that the Prakrit and Hindi terms have aspirated gh unlike the supposed Sanskrit etymon. Cognate with Bengali সিঙ্গাড়া (śiṅgaṛa, samosa)
