Etymology[edit]

Semi-learned borrowing from Sanskrit शोषयति (śoṣáyati).[1] Cognate with Old Punjabi ਸੋਖਿ (sokhi), Old Marathi 𑘫𑘻𑘬𑘜𑘹 (śoṣaṇe), 𑘫𑘻𑘎𑘜𑘹 (śokaṇe), 𑘫𑘻𑘏𑘜𑘹 (śokhaṇe), 𑘭𑘻𑘎𑘜𑘹 (sokaṇe), 𑘭𑘻𑘏𑘜𑘹 (sokhaṇe), Old Bengali সোষই.

सोषना (soṣanā /sokhanā/) (transitive)

  1. to suck, absorb
    • c. 1420, Kabīr, Kabīr Vāṇī 185.1:
      उलटी गंग संमुद्रहि सोषै॥
      ससिहर सूर ग्रासै॥
      ulaṭī gaṃga saṃmudrahi soṣai.
      sasihara sūra grāsai.
      the reversed Ganga dries up the ocean,
      the moon swallows the sun
    • c. 1420, Kabīr, Kabīr Vāṇī 185.8:
      बाज पिय़ालै अम्रित सोष्या॥
      नदी नीर भरि राष्या॥
      bāja piya़ाlai amrita soṣyā.
      nadī nīra bhari rāṣyā.
      [I have] sucked / dried up the nectar without [taking] a cup:
      the river filled up with the liquid/water
