From older हलुका (halukā), a metathesis of Prakrit 𑀮𑀳𑀼 (lahu, light, small) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓𑁆𑀓- (-kka-) + -𑀓- (-ka-),[1] from Sanskrit लघु (laghu, light, swift), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hlagʰúš, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁léngʰus. Cognate with Gujarati હલ્કું (halkũ), Nepali हलुको (haluko), Bengali হালকা (haloka), Odia ହାଳୁକା (hāḷukā), Maithili हलुक (haluk), Bhojpuri हलुक (haluk), Punjabi ਹਲ੍ਕਾ (halkā), Sindhi هلکو (halko), Marathi हल्का (halkā), हळ्का (haḷkā), and distantly, Latin levis, English light.
