Alternative scripts[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Of unclear origin. Related to New Indo-Aryan [script needed] (*hiṭṭ-) and [script needed] (*haṭṭ-), and probably borrowed from a foreign source.

The meaning of "to be empty", attested in some texts, is likely spurious.

Pronunciation[edit]

Root[edit]

हिण्ड् (hiṇḍ)

  1. to go, move, wander, or roam about
  2. to disregard, slight
