From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰwáyati (“to call”), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰewH- (“to call””). Cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬠𐬀𐬌𐬌𐬈𐬌𐬙𐬌 (zbaiieiti), Old Church Slavonic зъвати (zŭvati). Compare हवते (havate).
