Bengali[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From earlier খুকি (khuki, infant, baby), with metathesized consonants from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀓𑀼𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀺 (kukkhi), from Sanskrit कुक्षि (kukṣi, belly, womb), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *kuṭṣíṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kućšíš, possibly an old derivation of Proto-Indo-European *kuḱis (belly; vulva); with a semantic shift from "belly" > "womb" > "infant" > "baby, child" (for another similar development, see child).
