Related to থাল (thal) and থালি (thali); all of them are from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀣𑀸𑀮𑀻 (thālī), from Sanskrit स्थाल (sthāla, “vessel, pot, earthern ware”), vṛddhi derivative of स्थल (sthala, “ground, land”).
