Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Old Bengali পিঁপডা (pim̐paḍā), nasalized from Prakrit 𑀧𑀺𑀧𑁆𑀧𑀟𑀸 (pippaḍā), from a substrate (compare Sanskrit पिपीलिका (pipīlikā)).[1] Cognate with Sylheti ꠙꠤꠙꠠꠣ (fifṛa), Assamese পিপৰা (pipora), Odia ପିମ୍ପୁଡ଼ି (pimpuṛi), Magahi 𑂣𑂱𑂁𑂣𑂚𑂲 (pimpaṛī), 𑂣𑂱𑂣𑂩𑂲 (piprī). Artificial or spontaneous nasalization is common in eastern Indo-Aryan languages, along with a more prominent presence of the velar nasal. Doublet of পিপীলিকা (pipilika).
