Inherited from Sanskrit *भुण्ड (bhuṇḍa, “belly”). Cognate with Assamese ভুঁৰি (bhũri), Odia ଭୁଣ୍ଡି (bhuṇḍi), Nepali भुँड़ि (bhũṛi).
