Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Classical Persian مهدی (mahdī), from Arabic مَهْدِيّ (mahdiyy, literally rightly-guided, rational). The intial e-vowel forms may be via an intermediate Hindustani مهدی / महदी (mahdī), which often vocalizes the cluster ah as êh.
