Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Prakrit 𑀭𑁄𑀤𑁆𑀤 (rŏdda), from Sanskrit रौद्र (raudra), vriddhi of रुद्र (rudra, Rudra (who was sometimes associated with the sun), literally the weeper), from the root रुद् (rud, to weep). Doublet of রুদ্র (rudro), রোয়া (rōẇa, to weep, cry, lament), and রোদ্দুর (rōddur), an ardhatatsama. Cognate with Assamese ৰ’দ (röd) and Sylheti ꠞꠂꠖ (roido).
