Borrowed from Sanskrit श्वशुर (śvaśura), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *swáśuras, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *swáćuras, from Proto-Indo-European *swéḱuros. Cognate with Hindustani سسر / ससुर (sasur).
