Originally a compound of ગ્યાસ (gyās) + તેલ (tel). ગ્યાસ (gyās) from English gas and was later modified (by influence from ઘાસ (ghās, “grass”)) to ઘાસ (ghās), and તેલ (tel, “oil”) underwent metathesis.
