[edit]Inherited from Prakrit 𑀲𑁂𑀯𑀬 (sevaya) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟𑁆- (-ḍ-), from Sanskrit सेवक (sevaka, “servant”). According to folk etymology, inherited from Sanskrit श्रमण (śramaṇa), a word used to refer to Jain monks in ancient times. Cognate with Assamese সেও (xeü, “bowed down, humbled”), Punjabi ਸੇਉੜਾ (seuṛā, “Jain mendicant”) and Sindhi سيوِڙو (seviṛo, “Hindu mendicant”)
