Etymology

Inherited from Prakrit 𑀲𑁂𑀯𑀬 (sevaya) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟𑁆- (-ḍ-), from Sanskrit सेवक (sevaka, servant). According to folk etymology, inherited from Sanskrit श्रमण (śramaṇa​), a word used to refer to Jain monks in ancient times. Cognate with Assamese সেও (xeü, bowed down, humbled), Punjabi ਸੇਉੜਾ (seuṛā, Jain mendicant) and Sindhi سيوِڙو (seviṛo, Hindu mendicant)
