Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀳𑀻𑀭𑀕 (hīraga), from Sanskrit हीरक (hīraka). Cognate with Assamese হীৰা (hira), Bengali হীরা (hira), Hindustani ہِیرَا / हीरा (hīrā), Marathi हिरा (hirā), Punjabi ہِیرَا / ਹੀਰਾ (hīrā), Sindhi هيِرو / हीरो (hīro).
