Inherited from Sanskrit ठक्कुर (ṭhakkura). Cognate to Bengali ঠাকুর (ṭhakur) and Hindi ठाकुर (ṭhākur). Doublet of ଠାକୁରାଣୀ (ṭhakuraṇi).
