Etymology

From Proto-Dravidian *perV- (big) + ಪುಲಿ (puli, tiger). The formation is from the Proto-Dravidian stage; compare Tamil பெரும்புலி (perumpuli), Telugu బెబ్బులి (bebbuli), Kondekor [script needed] (berbullū, tiger), Ollari [script needed] (berpul, tiger), Kolami पेर्पुल (perpul).
