  1. The 34th letter of Malayalam alphabet, called (na). Historically there was another character to represent just the apical alveolar nasal ( (ṉa)) and ന just for the dental one, nowadays it has become obsolete and ന represents both of them. Transliterated as n.

Usage notes[edit]

Word initially it could be pronounced as either /n̪/ or /n/ eg നീ /n̪iː/ "you" and ന്യൂനം /njuːnɐm/ "deficiency", medially could be pronounced as either /n/ eg ആന or /n̪/ eg നാനൂറ്; when geminated ന്ന it could be either /n̪ː/ or /nː/, it doesnt occur finally. word final /n/ is represented as ; /n̪/ doesnt occur finally.
