Etymology
From ผี (pǐi, “ghost”) + ขนุน (kà-nǔn, “jack tree”); literally "jack tree ghost" or "ghost of jack tree"; from the fact that prostitutes in Bangkok often stood under jack trees along the Lot Canal at night.[1]
