From Proto-Tai *wuːᴬ (to float), from Middle Chinese (MC bjuw, “to float”). Cognate with Lao ຟູ (), ᦝᦴ (fuu), Shan ၽူး (phúu) or ၾူး (fúu), Ahom 𑜇𑜥 (phū), Zhuang fouz.
