Etymology 1
From Proto-Tai *lɯːmᴬ (“to forget”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩃᩨ᩠ᨾ, Lao ລືມ (lư̄m), Khün ᩃᩨ᩠ᨾ, Lü ᦟᦹᧄ (luem), Tai Dam ꪩꪳꪣ, Shan လိုမ်း (lúem), Tai Nüa ᥘᥪᥛᥰ (lüem), Ahom 𑜎𑜢𑜤𑜉𑜫 (lüm), Zhuang lumz.

Etymology 2
From Proto-Southwestern Tai *mlɯnᴬ ("to open (the eyes)") (Pittayaporn, 2008). The final /*-n/ became /-m/ due to assimilation with initial /*m-/. The initial /*ml-/ became /l-/ as usual. Cognate with Isan มืน.
