Etymology 1
From Proto-Tai *ʰmwɯjᴬ (“bear”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉ᩠ᨾᩦ, Lao ໝີ (mī), Lü ᦖᦲ (ṁii), Tai Dam ꪢꪲ, Shan မီ (mǐi), Ahom 𑜉𑜣 (mī), Zhuang mui, Bouyei moil. Compare Proto-Austronesian *Cumay (“bear”) (whence Paiwan tsumay). Old Chinese 羋 (OC *meʔ) was probably borrowed from a Kra-Dai language.
