Etymology[edit]

From Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer ʼanteṅ (“an unidentified title: person of distinction, woman of distinction, etc”) or Angkorian Old Khmer ʼaṃteṅ (idem);[1] believed to be corrupted forms of Old Khmer kaṃmrateṅ, kammrateṅ, kaṃrateṅ, kamrateṅ, kamrateṅa (“a title for divinities, royalty, and eminent ecclesiastics”), from which Modern Khmer គម្តែង (kumtaeng) is derived.

  1. (archaic) a formal title for a female commoner, conventionally prefixed to her name.

Usage notes[edit]

  • In 2404 BE (1861/62 CE), King Mongkut decreed that the title only be applied to wives of noblemen entitled to 400 or lower ศักดินา (sàk-dì-naa) and wives of male commoners.[2]
