From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *bjar ~ *p(i/u)r (“to fly”). Cognate with Old Chinese 飛 (OC *pɯl, “to fly”), 翂 (OC *pɯn, “appearance of birds flying slowly”), 奮 (OC *pɯns, “spread wings and fly”).
