ལྡག ‎(ldag) +‎ ‎(pa), the former from an earlier *C-ljag (C = prefix, likely the homorganic prenasalisation prefix -), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m/s/g-ljak ‎(to lick). Related to ལྕེ ‎(lce, tongue), ལྗགས ‎(ljags, (polite) tongue) and Burmese လျက် ‎(lyak, to lick).
