Etymology

From earlier *C-ljag (C = prefix, likely the homorganic prenasalisation prefix -), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m/s/g-ljak (to lick). Related to ལྕེ (lce, tongue), ལྗགས (ljags, (polite) tongue) and Burmese လျက် (lyak, to lick). Compare འདག ('dag).
