From Proto-Karen *rowᴮ (snake), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-b/m-ruːl (snake). Cognate with Pa'o Karen ရူး, Western Pwo ဂူ, Western Kayah ꤚꤟꤢꤨ (rṳ).
