Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /θwé/
  • Romanization: MLCTS: swe: • ALA-LC: sveʺ • BGN/PCGN: thwe: • Okell: thweì

Etymology 1

[edit]

Inherited from Old Burmese သုယ်, from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *swiʔ. Cognate with Old Chinese (OC *qʰʷiːɡ, “blood”) and Nuosu (sy, blood).

သွေး (swe:)

  2. children, offspring
  3. blood, ancestry, lineage
  4. other fluids resembling blood
  5. temperament, disposition
Derived terms
[edit]

Etymology 2

[edit]

The "whet, grind" sense is from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *sjwəj (to rub, scrape, shave); compare Mizo sui (to scrape) (STEDT swê "whet, rub, polish").

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “The other senses do not seem to be mentioned by STEDT or Luce 1981. MED groups them with the "convey, lure" sense, though it seems unclear whether they are truly related. Note similarities to Old Chinese (OC *sŋjaːs, “to unload”) for the "convey" sense.”

  1. (archaic) to convey
  2. to lure
  3. to defer, procrastinate
  4. (of breeze, zephyr) to waft
  5. to grind, whet, sharpen
