Borrowed from Sanskrit संक्रान्ति (saṃkrānti, passage of the sun from one celestial position to another). Cognate with Burmese သင်္ကြန် (sangkran, Thingyan); Thai สงกรานต์ (sǒng-graan, Songkran).
