Etymology[edit]

Traditional Burmese scholars relate the name to Pali Haṃsānagara (city of the shelducks). A Pa'O folk etymology says it was derived from Pa'o Karen ဟံႏလုဲင် (wide country) because Pa'O people claim direct descent from the Ancient Pyu people. But this is considered unlikely by most scholars.
