From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old Georgian ალაგი (alagi, road, way), according to Ačaṙean borrowed from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old Armenian աղագ (ałag, road way). The Armenian word itself has no secure etymology.

Cognate with Mingrelian ოლაგე (olage). Compare Laz ალაგა (alaga), ალარგა (alarga).
