From Old Georgian ალაგი ‎(alagi, road, way), according to Ačaṙean borrowed from Old Armenian աղագ ‎(ałag, road way). The Armenian word itself has no secure etymology.

Cognate with Mingrelian ოლაგე ‎(olage). Compare Laz ალაგა ‎(alaga), ალარგა ‎(alarga).
