Etymology

Uncertain. Related to Proto-Nakh *wir (“donkey, ass”), Mingrelian ვირი (viri, “rat; donkey”), Ossetian уыры (wyry, “rat”), Svan ჰუ̈ლ (hül, “mule”). Further has been connected with Mingrelian გირინი (girini, “donkey”).
