Etymology[edit]

According to Ačaṙyan, ultimately an Armenian borrowing. Compare Old Armenian գինձ (ginj), Armenian գինձ (ginj) and its dialectal forms.

The borrowing is probably mediated by Georgian ქინძი (kinʒi).
