From Proto-Kartvelian *q̣w(l)ep-, *q̣w(l)ip-, *q̣w(l)p- ‎(to scratch off; to strip off; to fade). Cognate with Laz ღლეპა ‎(ɣleṗa) and Svan ყუეფ ‎(q̇uep).

Ačaṙean derives from Armenian: compare Middle Armenian կլեպ ‎(klep, bark; peel; rind; husk; shelld), կլեպել ‎(klepel, to peel), Old Armenian կեղեւ ‎(kełew, bark; peel; rind; husk; shell)
