From Middle Georgian შხამი (šxami), სხამი (sxami), მსხამი (msxami), from Old Georgian *სხამი (*sxami) attested as სხამეანი (sxameani, poisonous, venomous). Compare Mingrelian ჟღამი (žɣami, venom; poison), and Svan ცხამ (cxam, spite, harm).
