From Ottoman Turkish خاتون (hātun, lady; noblewoman), itself from Persian خاتون (xātūn, lady; noblewoman), from Sogdian 𐼶𐼴𐽂𐼰𐼷𐼻𐼳 (γwtʾynh /⁠xwatēn, xutēn⁠/, queen). Ultimately from Proto-Iranian *hwatā́wniH, a feminine form of Proto-Iranian *hwatā́wā.
