Old Georgian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Together with the synonymous Old Armenian հարճ (harč) probably borrowed from Middle Iranian. See the Armenian entry for more.

For the Old Georgian (x) ~ Old Armenian հ (h) alternation Ačaṙean compares ხაშმი (xašmi) ~ հաշմ (hašm), ხარკი (xarḳi) ~ հարկ (hark), გლეხი (glexi) ~ գռեհ (gṙeh),[1] all Iranian borrowings.

Less likely borrowed from a Northeast Caucasian language, compare: Andi гьорчӏчӏи (horččʼi, female, wife) (← *гьоркӏкӏи (*horkkʼi)), Chamalal гьаш (haš, id.), Botlikh гьакки (hakki, id.), Tindi гьаккуй (hak̄uj, id.), Avar гӏоркӏкӏен (ʻorkkʼen, sheep),[2][3] all ultimately from Proto-Avaro-Andian *horḳ:ʷa-.[4]
